CASE STUDY: HEALTH INFORMATION EXCHANGE AWS MIGRATION

OVERVIEW

The RGVHIE is a non-profit organization established in 2011 to serve eight counties in South Texas with the purpose of facilitating access to, and retrieval of, health information to provide safer, more timely, efficient, and effective patient-centered care. The company provides patients with the ability to provide medical information to those who need it most, just when they need it.

RGVHIE first reached out to databasable in 2019 to discuss how they could migrate their on premise infrastructure to the AWS cloud and we’ve been working together ever since.

CHALLENGE

RGVHIE’s on-premise datacenter was a costly, inflexible, and sluggish nightmare, with outdated hardware and lackluster customer support. To shake off these shackles, they boldly embraced the AWS cloud, becoming the first HIE in the region to take the leap and contacted databasable to help them do so.

The critical objectives of the project were to:

  • Ensure strict HIPAA compliance with heightened security measures
  • Slash expenses without compromising on quality
  • Guarantee uninterrupted service with robust disaster recovery
  • Unleash boundless potential with enhanced flexibility and scalability

KEYS TO SUCCESS

Protecting the sensitive data stored by RGVHIE was our top priority. That’s why we made security and HIPAA compliance the backbone of the project. Thankfully, AWS provides almost all the tools necessary for HIPAA compliance, making the RGVHIE cloud-based environment more secure than ever.

Additionally, AWS is continually adding new security, auditing, and logging services, such as AWS GuardDuty and AWS Security Hub, which has further enhanced the security of the cloud environment since the initial migration.

AWS provides the ability to resize infrastructure on the fly, so RGVHIE can effortlessly manage capacity and application performance much more easily and ensure that each application is running on right-sized hardware. It goes without saying that this increased efficiency and reduced costs.

AWS also provides several cost saving plans that allowed RGVHIE to greatly reduce their overall spend by up to 60%.

AWS delivers bulletproof high availability with its multi-region, multi-AZ networking approach. RGVHIE harnessed this power with services like AWS Backup, Elastic Load Balancing, and Amazon S3, enabling them to great improve their disaster recovery capabilities. Now, we confidently run quarterly mini disaster recovery tests, something once deemed impossible with their old on-premise setup.

Migrating to the AWS cloud also allowed RGVHIE to move away from a monolithic server architecture and take advantage of AWS services such as Amazon RDS, AWS Lambda, Amazon EKS, and many more.

SUMMARY

Migration to the AWS cloud has allowed RGVHIE to reduce costs, increase security, high availability, scalability and flexibility. Not only that, AWS has allowed the environment to evolve and improve seamlessly over the years in a way that was just not possible with an on-premise data center.
